Approach

We apply multidisciplinary, participatory, systems-oriented approaches to address emerging challenges in agriculture and the food system. CFAS’ model of inquiry welcomes research that is basic or applied; occurs in the field or lab; and may be short- or long-term. We convene collaborative research teams that integrate the natural, social sciences, and humanities, into research characterized by rigorous experimental design, hypothesis testing, analysis and synthesis. Results are strategically communicated through both peer-reviewed publications and outreach to farmers, consultants and other practitioners. This approach closely links our research activities, research outcomes and outreach activities.

With an emphasis on integration, CFAS possesses the capacity to address complex environmental, economic and social challenges through long-term research that transcends typical grant cycles.

Research goals

Our main objective is to advance the research on the manifold interactions between agriculture, food consumption, nutrition, health, the environment, flows of information, and societal attitudes with a particular focus on policy options for increasing sustainability. This involves the development and use of new systems-oriented methods and indicators, empirical research with primary and secondary data, the identification of tradeoffs between different sustainability dimensions, and the synthesis of policy implications. Overarching research questions include:

• How do MENA’s food systems develop and what are implications for human and planetary health?

• What types of synergies and trade-offs between multiple sustainability outcomes of MENA’s food systems exist?

• What would be useful behavioral and policy changes to strengthen positive and reduce negative food systems trends, and how can these changes be inspired?

• How are different stakeholder and broader societal views on sustainable food systems shaped, and how can evidence-based science communication be improved?

What we do

Data Collection

we design surveys and employ trained personnel, automated systems, or survey tools, to gather information about various topics related to MENA’s food and agriculture. This can involve in-person interviews, online surveys, telephone calls, or sensor-based data collection.

Data Analysis

We provides data analyses services using advanced statistical approaches and econometric models both on the macro and micro levels. Our strength is in advising on issues where economics, development and public policy overlap. We apply rigorous, empirically tested and innovative principles of economics and social sciences to solving complex challenges. We conduct all forms of qualitative and quantitative data analyses, and we build predictive models using machine learning algorithms to forecast future data points. We conduct policy analysis for agricultural and food-related policies that can help governments and organizations in the MENA region develop effective policies to promote sustainable agriculture and food security.

Capacity Building and Training

We design and implement training programs for farmers, agricultural professionals, and government officials to enhance their knowledge and skills in agriculture and food systems.

Economic and Environmental Impact Assessment

we evaluate the environmental impact of agricultural and food production and recommending strategies for minimizing negative effects

Proposal Writing

We assist our partners in securing funding for agricultural and food-related projects through grant and proposal writing services

Event organization

We organize workshops and seminars on regular basis on issues related to the NENA’s food and agriculture. We also assist and co-organize with partners, throughout our networks on issues of mutual interest.
